DEI Isn’t a Choice—It’s the Future

After President Trump’s executive orders aimed at upending DEI were issued earlier this year, hundreds of prominent U.S. companies were faced with the choice of eliminating their DEI programs and complying with the government or standing behind their commitments to equity and facing off against DEI detractors. While many continue to misunderstand what “DEI” really means or why it’s important, we know the importance of creating a more equitable world. We join other courageous companies, such as Costco and JPMorgan Chase, in resistance to this retreat. We thoroughly believe in, and were founded on the concept of, mental health for all. But before you ask “why?”, it’s important to first ask, “what?”

What Is DEI?

DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—three fundamental principles that trace their roots back to the 1960s Civil Rights Movement in the United States. This was a time when America blatantly professed that all men are not created equal. People from certain racial, ethnic, gender, and ability groups were systematically denied basic civil rights: the right to vote, access education, housing, and employment opportunities.

DEI programs were put in place to combat these deep-seeded forms of discrimination and give equitable opportunity of civil rights to every American —regardless of race, gender, or background. Unfortunately, despite the progress we’ve made, the fight for these rights continues today.

So, Why Do We DEI?

We fully understand the historic and systemic prejudice that runs through our country’s institutions. We believe that it’s not just a fundamental right to access our civil rights—it’s also a fundamental right to mental healthcare. People need a sense of community—one that is inclusive, one that truly understands them, and one that offers a space for them to grow and thrive.

Our commitment to DEI is rooted in the belief that we can build a more supportive, accessible, and compassionate society for everyone—no matter their background.

The Facts Speak for Themselves

At our organization, DEI is not just a mission statement—it’s part of our DNA. With 60% of our staff identifying as BIPOC and an even gender split between men and women, our team reflects the diverse population we serve. We’re also working tirelessly to diversify our board, ensuring that a wide variety of voices are represented and heard.

Our commitment goes beyond race and gender. For example, we recognize the significant gaps in mental health services for the LGBTQ+ and military communities, and these groups are a top priority for us. Both communities face unique and extensive unmet needs in mental healthcare, and we’re here to change that.

At all levels—whether it’s staff, board, or participants—we strive daily to create spaces that are safeinclusive, and equitable. Our ultimate goal? Ensuring that mental health services are accessible to everyone.

DEI is Personal for Us

DEI doesn’t just affect us—it affects the people we serve. We recognize the communities that are underserved and overlooked, often facing discrimination and systemic barriers. Currently, 70% of our clients identify as BIPOC. This disproportionate representation is a direct result of the barriers built into our mental healthcare system and broader society—barriers that prevent or deter BIPOC individuals from receiving the support they need.

Research from NAMI shows that while BIPOC individuals experience mental health conditions at similar rates to white individuals, they often endure longer-lasting symptoms and more severe disabilities due to these systemic obstacles to proper treatment.

This is why we exist: to minimize or eliminate these barriers. Our work is focused on providing direct support, guiding individuals through the complexities of the mental healthcare system, and connecting them with service providers that are not only competent but inclusive and safe.

As our organization continues to grow, our top priority remains ensuring that our services are accessible and welcoming to everyone, no matter their background.

Our Commitment to DEI

To put it simply: We are deeply committed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. It’s not just part of our mission—it’s the foundation of everything we do.

Take Action: Your Role in DEI

At the heart of DEI is the idea that change starts with us—each and every one of us. Whether you’re part of a team, a community, or an organization, you have the power to make a difference. Challenge yourself to be a voice for those who are underserved and marginalized. Advocate for inclusive spaces, dismantle the barriers that prevent others from accessing care, and embrace the diversity around you.

We can’t do this alone. But together, we can build a world where everyone—regardless of race, gender, ability, or background—has an equal chance to thrive.

Are you ready to take action? Whether it’s in your workplace, your community, or even in your daily interactions, start by listening, learning, and taking intentional steps toward a more inclusive future. Your voice matters.

Let’s create change—together.
